In reply to the discussion: That the Right Is So Callous That It Could Ignore the Rape of a 10-Year Old [View all]Ocelot II
(128,751 posts)But then it turned that it was all true when the guy who raped her (twice) was arrested and confessed. Now what? The reason for discrediting the story was to be able to deny that abortions can be necessary to prevent really terrible consequences - and what's more appalling than a child being raped and becoming pregnant as a result, and then having to give birth to the rapist's child? Their implied theme is that abortions are only desired by slutty adult women who can't keep their legs together and don't want to be responsible for the result, but a raped child didn't fit the narrative so that can't have happened. Well, it did, so the AG (GOP, of course) turned on the doctor who helped her, threatening to prosecute her for failing to file the proper notifications. But of course she did file the reports, so that cigar also exploded in their faces.
So the latest thing they are harrumphing about how these incidents are so incredibly rare that the law shouldn't permit abortions just for those few rare cases. Rare? Turns out that there were 52 reported rapes of children who had to have abortions last year - just in Ohio. That's one a week. And anyhow, why should anyone suffer needlessly just because their situation is "rare"?
