82. Is it possible the general election was why leadership backed him?

She narrowly lost in the primary. Let's assume they were equally popular among Democrats and his margin was people relatively indifferent between them. However, the general election is everyone.

You could argue that she might fire up more Democrats to come out to vote. She might also fire up more Republicans/swing votes against her. I would bet the party and possibly outside polls polled the general election especially during the run off.

If those polls exist, they COULD test the hypothesis that someone to the left in a purple district would do better (Or a counter hypothesis that the centrist incumbent would do better. Obviously, you can't assume that this one district would be like all other districts.
