Either he hadn't cleared the original infection fully -- which I would consider a false negative on his test -- or he got infected again. It does sound like it is what they are calling a "rebound," but I would take that to mean that he got a false negative. Maybe the false negative was because tests aren't sensitive enough to pick up the smaller amount of virus he had in his system before it "rebounded," which is fair, but I would still say that is a false negative in that it showed he had cleared his original infection, when, in fact, he apparently had not.
