I think it's the religious angle that appeals to them. Maybe over time they'll see through the facade that is particular to America's (white) evangelical strain.

It's not a surprise to me so many in conservative media are dismissive on Pope Francis, who has a rather strong liberal streak compared to historical conservative Catholics. By dissing his liberal tilt, other American conservatives who tend to fall into anti-Catholic bias, hope to "peal off" those in the faith that align with their version of Christianity.
