I've known Jerry for over ten years, spoke to him twice this past week.

He has been occupied with his wife's advanced cancer, but the latest round of treatment seems to be working, and on the phone, he seemed to be anything but "past his prime." Maybe you have gotten a different impression in your conversations with him. I can rely only on my own.
