he would proudly proclaim that when he did things "his way" and didn't listen to experts and consultants, he was successful. His political successes just gave him more misplaced confidence to turn a deaf ear to anything and everything that other people said. He wasn't willing to listen to anyone outside the voices in his head, except when they were singing his praises.
