Here are the rules. If an older Democrat is running the GOP will push for Term Limits(tm). If an older Republican is running the GOP pushes Seniority. Strom Thermond was still drawing his Civil War pension there at the end wasn't he? Honestly I think GOP run states would wheel the coffins into the Senate if they kept the power, so mental health or age is really irrelevant for a Republican. And I'm sure the GOP will gladly hand the Grandson important positions well beyond his seniority* simply because he's a legacy. They're all about the unearned privilege.
*I started to say ability, but made myself laugh.
