For starters, migrants and asylum seekers are not distinct in their eyes. All we get from them is "cross border bad." Our empathy moves us to at least guess why individuals or families would walk to another country exposed to the elements knowing that law enforcement is waiting and deportation back is likely. For the right, the end of border crossings by itself equals "problem solved", giving no thought to the problems of the crossers going unsolved.

Empathy opens the way to understanding the true complexity of the issue, trying to be humane to migrants and asylum seekers within the framework of existing laws and the tougher problem of moving the source countries to alleviate the conditions that precipitated the migration.
