(8,826 posts)that Wisconsin is a deeply racist state. Johnson ran a deeply racist campaign using "scary black guy" "deadbeat black guy" themes. It was just enough to get him by.
Just as an idea of how deep in their bigotry and hatred so many of these people are you can check out their bombings/shootings etc. of indigenous people of the Ojibwe when the members began exercising their fishing rights in northern Wisconsin in the late '80's and into the '90's. I remember people traveling from all over the state in order to "prevent" the Ojibwe members from fishing.
It literally ran on as a war for about 3 years. There were books written about it and a documentary done. It even gained international attention. Suffice it to say that the bigots used the most vile words for the Ojibwe along with violence. In the end the big stink the bigots made was about nothing because the tribal fishing was only ever taking 3% of the subject fish population. Rest assured those feelings towards non-whites of any kind are still mostly there all around Wisconsin. You can do a search for Wisconsin fishing war etc. and get more detail. I won't put up the images from then because it is still too disturbing to me. But as a final thought just imagine how hard it was for Barnes to even come as close as he did when faced with people who would rather commit violence against men, women and children rather than allow them even 3% of their heritage.
