This is not the look the Democratic Party wants to adopt.
Being vigilant for hate crimes and other illegal actions is essential. But policing thoughts and associations is problematic. Law enforcement officials associating with convicted criminals is something that can and should be tracked. LE officers being members of legal, though repugnant, organizations is a red flag, but not in itself grounds for dismissal.
In large part because different people define repugnant in different ways. We think of racist, fascist organizations calling for the overthrow of the current governmental system as bad. Other people think belonging to the ACLU, or GLAAD, or the Church of the Pastafarians are worse.
In order for them to not get to fire the people we agree with, we don't get to get to fire the people they agree with. There is also that pesky Bill of Rights and its guarantees of free speech and free assembly.
Watch them. And the minute they cross the legal line, take them down and prosecute them. But that is as far as we can go.
Or so it seems to me.
