(1,766 posts)The feds have convicted literally scores of congressional reps, since the beginning of the republic. Matthew Lyon was convicted in 1798 for violating the Alien and Sedition Acts. He's also the only Congressional rep re-elected while serving time in jail.
Things were mostly quiet until Teddy Roosevelt became President. That's when the feds started cracking down on corruption. The first sitting senator was convicted during TR's term: John H Mitchell, for taking part in an Oregon land fraud scheme.
Every administration since Coolidge has had a legislative member charged and convicted of federal crimes. And that includes under Joe Biden (Jeff Fortenberry (r-NE) convicted of lying to investigators--https://www.justice.gov/usao-cdca/pr/congressman-jeff-fortenberry-found-guilty-concealing-facts-and-lying-investigators).
So maybe before flinging around the accusation that DOJ won't go after Congress reps, consider how they've had zero qualms about doing it in the past.
