(288 posts)The Jewish people are all members of a religion - Judaism. We are also members of a general ethnic group defined by our religion with several subdivisions: Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrachi, Ethiopian/Beta Israel/Falashi, and a few others. The first three groups all have genetic markers that link them together with each other and with inhabitants of the Middle East. Ethiopian Jews are genetically distinct. Interestingly, Ashkenazi Jews developed the Yiddish language (from High German, Hebrew, and Aramaic). Sephardi Jews developed Ladino from Spanish and Hebrew.
While most American Jews are Askenazi, the first Jews to come to the New World were Sephardi, attempting to escape the Inquisition. The earliest congregations were established in what is how the US were in New York City (then New Amsterdam) and Newport, Rhode Island. Note that these people were strong supporters of the American Revolution.
So, are we a racial group? No. We are a religious/ethnic group. We intermarry with the populations with whom we live. Some convert to Judaism and become members. Over time we look like the population in which we live, but retain ethnic and religious identity.
This raises the question of what is "race"? African Americans whose ancestors were enslaved and brought to the New World hundreds of years ago have genetically mixed with the populations in the Americas - Native Americans and various European groups. The same is true for any group of people who have been invaded or did the invading.
So, with regards to Hitler and his racial purity nonsense - all I can say is that it is nonsense, pure bullshit. Those that continue to embrace those ideas are batshit crazy. Just an excuse to turn people against others for no rational reason.
