They were elected by racist traitors....LOTS OF THEM!

Jerrymandering played a major role in the outcome, but there were three million more votes cast nationally for Republicans (50.6%) than Democrats (47.8%).

A proportional assignment of seats based on national results would have the democrats with five fewer seats than they hold.
