...against what they've been told by others, or what they believe they know.

Staying mum might keep the damage from piling on, but in many cases, the damage may already be done in testimony before the grand jury.

Also, there may be opportunities or efforts to immunize one or both to overcome any reticence to testify, all of that in front of the jurors, as well.
