nostalgia for this happy (for white people) white America picture, and of "out-group hate" or rejection, of what conflicts.

These days, though, even most conservatives prone to white nationalist nostalgia (including even many MAGAs) want that picture advanced to include many of the social advances they grew up with and see as normal. Just a couple episodes of bland "Father Knows Best" will have something to elicit an "Oh, I don't think so!" among them also. As opposed to the RW extremists whose noise is being trumpeted everywhere, but are far less representative.

Conservatives in general do tend to value and need for comfort a higher degree than liberals of social conformity and social stability undisturbed by change, and those old sitcoms were full of both. But for most the nostalgia's for a "natural," "appropriate" domination by what was seen as the dominant culture. They have a notably greater comfort with and acceptance of inequality than liberals. But hate and ugly oppression, cringeworthy servility by minorities, lashes to the children, are not part of the nostalgia for most, only the worst.

People in our whitest states may fail to realize how comfortable even most conservatives are who grew up with more diversity and integration than is normal in white states. Horrible people want to bring back lynching to keep other races servile, many authoritarian MAGAs want the same effect while denying evil's required; but many moderate conservatives approved the #BLM protests and their goals.

That most conservatives want most of what we do, including good jobs for women, etc, even though to less "wild" and more conforming degrees, is important to make the most of. While they vote with MAGAs and make MAGAism possible, it's appropriate enough to regard them as a huge part of that problem, but still will recognizing the significant differences among them. Hopefully the extremism of the MAGAs will continue forcing more and more moderate cons to a point where they have to break away to vote for what all studies say they want. To the point where the norm to conform to shifts away from extremism to a sensible decency.
