(21,461 posts)it was not the custom but is being encouraged now. The Protestant denomination that I now belong to did not do it in the past, but is now encouraging it, too. Neither one makes it a requirement, but they do discuss and encourage it. A few other denominations are also doing this now, along with dispensing ashes on Ash Wedenesday, which they did not used to do.
I am wondering about the 20% that you mentioned. The ELCA Lutherans and the PCUSA Presbyterians are now encouraging the practice and some Methodists, too. Episcopalians do it. Those are mainline Protestant denominations. If you put them all together, along with the few Evangelicals who now encourage it as a part of spiritual meditation, I think that it would be more than 20% of Protestants. Not a majority, but more than 20%.
Anyway, the point is that it gives MTG less of an excuse to say that it would not apply to her.
