(26,038 posts)70. Kentucky law says that the governor has to appoint a Republican
to replace McConnell.
But, since the governor is a Dem, I think he should honor McConnell by using a very McConnell type of tactic. Leave the office of Senator open until the next election in order to "let the voters decide." That was McConnell's excuse for leaving the SCOTUS seat open when Garland was nominated as a justice.
Or, pick a Dem, have him/her register as a Republican, and appoint them. It's what Mitch would do in the same situation.
