La cultura mayor has taught us all that disrespect is the default, and that respect must be earned.

As a life-long (non-fundamentalist) atheist, I contend that it is just the opposite.

Respect is the default, and it is disrespect that must be earned.

Successful cross-cultural communication and multiculturalism requires respect.

Here's a university student from the city, who as part of her studies, in an experiment in multiculturalism, wants to create a fusion hip-hop / bambuco patiano music video. What is important for white folks (and others) to note here is that she comes correct, with respect for another culture (a state within a state). She takes the time to learn about the music, the culture, the history, and the religion of another culture, recognizing that she is walking onto hallowed territory, sacred territory.

The last 3 minutes or so have the resulting music video.

Black folks have a lot to teach us all about respect, if only the rest of us are willing to learn.
