(22,773 posts)39. Our pets just "are". They know when they are happy & loved,
and they know when they don't feel well and are suffering, but they don't have a sense of their own mortality and can't anticipate their own deaths as we can with both theirs & ours. They really live in the big "now" for the most part.
I have 2 cats, one 12, one 5. I'll likely outlive the older one but the younger one is more questionable. They are so bonded now that it will be hard on the younger one when her older buddy dies.
Unlike our children, the curse of loving our pets is the knowledge that we will likely outlive them.
Sorry for the passing of your furry friend.
