The actual indictment and arraignment didn't occur for several additional months and the accused again appeared in court, entered their plea and then were released. These folks stayed free during the trial, which wasn't completed for two years after they were arraigned and continued to stay free for three years pending appeals even after being sentenced to as much as 20 years in prison.
Another example, but not one I had any involvement with: Enfron. Jeffrey Skilling was arrested and pled not guilty in 2004. He was released on bail. It was nearly two years until his trial started and he finally reported to jail in December 2006, after having been found guilty in May and sentenced in October. Unlike the case I was involved in, Skilling was not allowed to stay out of jail pending his appeal, but he was not jailed for a single day during the nearly three years after his arrest.
