...and veterans in general, calling them "suckers" and "losers", and even asking (rhetorically, I presume) "what's in it for them?!".

Readers of this thread may be interested in the work of writer/historian Morris Berman, who wrote his "America Trilogy" about these issues: The Twilight of American Culture, Dark Ages America, and Why America Failed. He puts his money where his mouth is; in the early '00s, Berman emigrated to Mexico.
