but (R)s who were anti-45, but chose to run as (I) to distinguish themselves from the loons and potentially pick up some like-minded (R)s, non-affiliated voters, and even some (D) voters who are willing to vote for the "least harmful" on the ballot.

The one thing about (R)s is that they may ignore the most crazy of their party but will still insist on voting (R) for everything else. It's been difficult to get them to claw away from a party that has gone far far down the rabbit hole.
