One could go on and on.
The "best" countries are not perfect countries and all have their dark side. Some just hide it better. Were Sweden and Switzerland "good" countries that stayed neutral while 30-50 million or more people died?
We still have the freedom to do something about this country's problems. And we still have the freedom to leave to go to a better country if we want - and take all our money with us so we become the rich in a poorer but "better" country. And remember, as bad as we may think this country is, the number of people leaving because of "how bad things are now" is nothing compared to the people who come here because
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost[sic] to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
and have done so in spite of our history of being "not as good as we think we are" because those that are doing well don't see the viewpoint of those that are not.
There is NO SUCH THING as "a normal time in America" unless you consider these times to be normal. And, yes, I'm in my late 70s. Previous times were only "normal" if one could not see or would not see or would read only sanitized history. We are what we are and we need to do better but that doesn't make thee times any worse than the past nor does it justify tuning one's back because of imperfection because things will never be perfect.
