an almost-all-the-South nightmare with murders, federal troops having to stop lunatics, bombings of children, police repeatedly publicly beating up peaceful protesters even as it was shown on TV, cities and states publicly defying the courts and more.
a country divided over an unpopular war that cost 50,000+ of Americans to die needlessly in a foreign country
Americans treating veterans like dirt because they got drafted instead of being rich enough to run to Canada or join the then-safe National Guard like two of our later presidents
Segregation, by law in the South and by custom, threats and pressure in the North.
Building bigger and better bombs and having nuclear air raid drills instead of nutcase shooters
All the evils described in the OP were not one person but they all existed.
