(53,599 posts)that I also swore I'd never work in food service again, though I did still work in retail for many years. If nothing else being a waitress made me a very understanding customer and an excellent tipper.
When dealing with the public, I found that they are the most demanding and rude when it comes to their food. "I ordered my eggs over-light and these eggs are over-easy." What the hell? You can imagine the look on the cook's face when I brought them back. It was a good thing that they didn't have to deal directly with the customer. Eggs were always the most difficult, as people are more particular about that food than most others. Geez people, just eat at home.
Some people really are very picky, but for so many, it is really about power. They love the opportunity to look down on other people. I was annoyed the most by customers who picked on my teenage employees, often talking to them in a way they'd never talk to an adult.
Overall, I will say it was a learning experience, but I'm not sure I wanted to know that much about human nature. It could be very depressing.
