I have been saying for many decades now whenever our party allows itself to be drug into "culture wars" it loses WAY more than it wins. What has occurred during that time supports this position.
These battles very much favor Rs, who know it and work tirelessly to set them up.
But, a lot of our base wants these direct battles and it generates a lot of passion on our side, which feels good. But, when the vote counting occurs its fools gold because there just are more racist, misogynistic and hateful people who get motivated to vote in these battles than people of good spirit willing to cate about the plight of these folks to take the time out of their day to vote.
People over react to noting this with the throw them under the bus stuff, but that is a false binary frame. You promote true freedom and personal choice and the right of everyone to live the life they want to live, and fight for those who are being oppressed.
There is another reply just ahead of me that makes a similar point and relays better framing.
