(28,836 posts)71. Not sure there was ever a time when that wouldn't have been true.
The lack of unity is nothing new. Outside of the World Wars, perhaps, I don't think the US could have been even considered unified. The states have always been their own little fiefdoms, their political influence and independence waxing and waning in the political winds at the federal level.
