In reply to the discussion: "Do you not speak English?" -- Nazi Gorka to BBC Host [View all]Emrys
(9,097 posts)It's not "Chris Mason stands up to/rebuts/marmalizes/destroys [insert DU standard hyperbole here to taste] Sebastian Gorka in all-too-predictable incendiary interview". It is what it is. Sebastian Gorka "Tears Strip Off BBC Journalist".
I doubt a significant proportion of the BBC's listenership at that hour of the morning recalled who Gorka is and anything about his "colourful" background, largely because he's rabid but insignificant in the UK (and not much more significant in the USA), as are his views, which we've been hearing ad nauseam for years on the UK airwaves, accompanied by almost identical repetitive headlines about his obnoxious behaviour when interviewed.
You don't "balance" anything by engaging with Gorka and affording him the credibility of ranking alongside even the likes of Joe Walsh, let alone a former federal prosecutor, because he's way out on the fringe.
I didn't hear Mason's intro to the interview, but unless it ran along the lines of "And now we're going to hear from Sebastian Gorka, and here I'll quote from Wikipedia, 'Various national security scholars in academic and policymaking circles have characterized Gorka as fringe. Some critics have challenged his academic credentials, his views on Islam and radicalization, and his motives for identifying with the Order of Vitéz and supporting Magyar Gárda, an organization banned by the European Union. ... In 1998, Gorka served as an adviser to Viktor Orbán. ... From 2014 to 2016, Gorka was an editor for national security affairs for Breitbart News, where he worked for Steve Bannon' - listeners may have heard of Bannon - 'In April 2021, Gorka was permanently banned from YouTube for repeatedly violating the company's policy on spreading misinformation related to the 2020 presidential election.' And here he is, apparently the best that Donald Trump's campaign can field to us as a spokesperson, and the most enlightening figure we can find at this point to set out the Trump campaign's stances, take it away, Sebastian," I'm left somewhat unimpressed by the BBC's attempt at "balance".
