I truly believe he views himself as, and wants to be seen as a martyr.

To this end, he is convincing himself that he can be a martyr by going to jail.

And he thinks if he goes to jail, the entire country will view him as a martyr.

The problem is, once he's in jail for 24 hours, he's going to realize he made a horrible mistake.
