(2,075 posts). . . But the name, "Barabbas" actually means, "Son of the Father". The "bar" part we are familar with from the Jewish tradition of Bar Mitzva, and "abbas" is Aramaic for father.
The Gospel scene in which the people are given a choice between releasing Jesus, the Son of God the Father, and Barabbas--Son of the Father--is one of the many, MANY reasons I regard the New Testament to be a stunning example of the game of Telephone, also called "Whisper Down the Lane."
There is a lot of inspiring content is both major portions of the Bible. However, they are and have always been human documents, written, studied and employed to human ends.
The caustic reactions of some modern-day church members to some of the nobler teachings of the Christian scriptures does not surprise me in the least.
Christianity IS in crisis. But, then again, it was formed in crisis and it will continue to mutate as it has across the centuries as it is used to meet cultural needs and preferences. I am convinced that it fall away from cultural dominance and become background noise in the Western world, just as the Greek mythology has.
