In reply to the discussion: Pastor alarmed after Trump-loving congregants deride Jesus' teachings as 'weak' [View all]Effete Snob
(8,387 posts)Continuing in Luke 22, those swords aren't just for show:
49 When Jesus followers saw what was going to happen, they said, Lord, should we strike with our swords? 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered, No more of this! And he touched the mans ear and healed him.
Not "that was uncalled for" but "no more", suggesting that one ear was just about right - and no rebuke for the use of violence by people who, unlike us, have been in the physical presence of Jesus and his direct teachings FAR MORE than we get third hand in the Bible.
So these guys were in a better position to understand his teaching than we would ever be. And - out came the swords for a first strike.
And, as far as the healing goes, it was a nice gesture, but doesn't make up for the trauma of having been attacked and having a body part painfully excised.
Jesus had fair warning they were going to do it - 'Lord, should we strike with our swords?' and could have acted more swiftly to prevent the injury in the first place. Dude could light a fig tree on fire at 50 yards, but couldn't stop someone swinging a sword? I'm not buying that for one red hot second.
