(22,876 posts)That doesn't mean they'd all follow him off a cliff. At this point in time, I don't think he has nearly as much power as some would ascribe to him.
I expect a lot of people won't agree, and I'll admit I don't have anything concrete to back this up. I just have a very strong feeling that the fanatical devotees who would do absolutely anything for him are a much smaller percentage of his base than in 2016 or 2020. Yes, some of them are that crazy, but I don't believe the majority are. Yes, he's polling well, but the polls can only tell us so much. The pollsters ask you who you plan to vote for. They don't ask if you would shoot someone or storm the Capitol for that person, much less start a civil war. Being willing to vote for someone is a whole different thing from being willing to do violence on their behalf.
Yes, there are Trump supporters who are willing to do ugly things on his provocation. We all know that. I just think it's erroneous to assume that most of those who are willing to vote for him are in that state of mind, and I'm really not worried about an all out conflagration, especially with a responsible Democrat in the White House. One of the main reasons things got so bad on J6 was that Trump deliberately set things up so there would be inadequate resources available to repell the rioters. That's not going to happen on Joe's watch.
