to sleep before you are burned. It was a comforting thought, though I'm not sure "sleep" is an accurate description. I think "passing out" or becoming unconscious prior to suffocation and death would be more apt. Passing out or losing consciousness would still be preferable, of course.

eta: I am agreeing with your post and description of smoke inhalation. I just thought calling it "sleep" was disingenuous and euphemistic. A comfortable fairy tale.
