(379 posts)do more research, and not only listen to hype! Pits are equipped no more than any other dog for harm - they prefer to hang out and relax all day with their people. Sadly people have turned their aggression on the dogs and made them into what they are not by nature in most cases. Check out http://atts.org/breed-statistics/ and look at the American Pit Bull Terrier - Another good site is: http://www.politifact.com/georgia/statements/2011/aug/03/elaine-boyer/are-pit-bulls-more-aggressive-other-dogs/
I have a pit mix now who is a darling and has bonded with our whippet mix; I had a lab mix that was very dog aggressive, and I had an airedale who could go either way but never bit a human. On the other hand my son took 76 stitches in his face due to bites from a Westie. Conditions and circumstances are usually more to blame than any particular breed.
