(4,610 posts)Most are older than 30, half are married. Almost half are parents.
They are more likely than average to be unemployed and have criminal records (but because they are overwhelmingly male, criminal background isn't so glaring as more men have that than women).
I think incels skew younger and less socially involved. Hatred of women is more central to their worldview, though they do hate men who are "cooler" or more successful, and more successful men of another race would outrage them.
The Proud Boys to me are familiar-- angry over-30 white guys who are likely to have or develop anti-social attitudes. Trump gave them a channel to feel important and affirmed.
The pre-civil rights era KKK were much more likely to be prominent citizens--even mayors and sheriffs-- because the whole Southern white culture depended on segregation and oppression. But the post-1950s KKK people in my experience (I knew some) were more like Proud Boys-- angry, resentful, no longer "protecting the status quo" but "actively and violently asserting power".
One common thread with all these disaffected anti-social guys-- they are very easily exploited by rich men. And they never ever ever figure it out. I keep waiting for some of those defendants going off to jail to say, "Hey, wait a minute! Why am I in prison, and Trump is jetting around grifting more money?" I think I've just heard one of them point that out.
