24. I had the chance to see this kind of thing in person.

My former husband's nephew was barely 1 year old when he got his glasses. Before that, he did not play with baby toys like other kids. He ignored people who tried to show him those little Fischer Price stack-the-rings toys. Instead, he held up a ring to his face and stared at it with a blank expression. I wondered if he had a cognitive impairment, but did not mention that to his parents.

Their pediatrician suspected vision problems and referred them to a specialist in children's and infant's eye care. What a difference those glasses made! No more scowling and squinting. He perked up, smiled, and quickly picked up what he had missed before when people tried to show him things.
