Currently 433 seats are filled, so 217 is the magic number. If 10 Republicans voted present, it would be 423, and 212 would win the day. But that doesn't allow for a single Democrat to vote Present. Odds of 10 Repubs voting present are basically nil. But if Dems can strike a deal, they could allow a Repub to win and also deny they voted for him.

They were bouncing around the idea of changing the rules to make it as simple plurality to win the speaker ship.Doubt it

It's been done twice in history, but was also ratified in both instances by a majority vote.
