or limited series television show would have been fascinating and compelling. But that's not Scorcese's style!

From what it sounds like the cuts and additions added to the narrative quite well. Scorcese is a masterful storyteller. (One of the things my husband missed from the book was how well the FBI infiltrated the community. They showed it with the one character, but it was so brief.)
