In reply to the discussion: Protestors vandalized the NY Public Library yesterday. [View all]ExWhoDoesntCare
(4,741 posts)85. The Library of Alexandria 'loss'
Sort of isn't. Most don't know its real history, because its history is mostly lost. What we do know is that the supposed fire didn't happen when people think it did, and it didn't happen intentionally.
Really:
The Burning Of The Library: The Evidence
The myth is that the Library was intentionally burnt. Julius Caesar did indeed attack the port of Alexandria. At the time a text tells us that he burnt all those ships and the rest that were in the docks. This means the wooden boats tied together in the harbor burnt one after the other and that the wind spread the flames to buildings on the seafront.
Did Julius Caesar Burn The Library of Alexandria?
However, the text describing the Museum previously quoted, written 25 years later, doesnt even mention fire damage. Nor the tragic loss of a library.

The very last time we find a mention of the Museum or Library is circa 380 AD, that is, more than 400 years after Julius Caesar supposedly destroyed it. The scholar was Theon, the man from the Mouseion, an Egyptian, a philosopher.

If that's not enough, most people don't realize Alexandria had not one but *TWO* great libraries. The other was known as the Temple at Serapeum and Theophilus, a christian ruler, ordered its destruction, along with that of *all* pagan temples. We don't know if the books were destroyed at that time. One would think so, but no one knows for sure because no evidence exists about books destroyed with the temple.
Evidence--such a pesky thing.

So we're counting bodies now? And exactly how much do Israeli bodies count? 1/3 of a person?

Andrew Carnegie was a genuine Robber Baron, yet between 1883 & 1929 funded 1,795 US libraries....
