(18,710 posts)The people Hillary referred to as "deplorables" had been behaving deplorably for years, calling her, her husband and even their daughter every vile name imaginable, accusing her of all manner of crimes, making up vicious lies, inventing loony conspiracies, demanding her imprisonment, and worse. It was an accurate characterization.
It was also accurate when Obama, referring to working-class voters in old industrial towns decimated by job losses, said: "They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." That wasn't an insult, it was true. It was also meant as constructive criticism, followed up with a whole raft of proposed policy solutions to remedy their economic problems.
Though true, corporate media hammered Obama mercilessly for the rest of the campaign for that statement, calling him "elitist," "out of touch" and bringing up the "guns and God gaffe" at every opportunity. And corporate media did so despite the fact their own reporters and pundits had been making the same observations and comments about rust-belt voters for decades.
