(15,545 posts)While gray is generally accepted at a funeral, black is better and light gray is a bit 'off.' There is also some nuance as it was a gray coat which she did not remove. We cannot excuse her by saying it is cultural, because in Eastern Europe, black is derigeur.
I can remember remarking on one post that at least she did not wear her "I don't care, do you?" coat. That was good...
But I have not seen one single post defending her. Why would anyone do so. I did have compassion for her because when Trumpy was elected it became clear she was far, far out of her depth in her new role as First Lady. She did lose me with the 'I don't care' label on the back of her coat, which marked her as low-class, or perhaps proletarian.
Her father was a member of the Communist party in Slovenia, and she was set to study design and engineering to serve the state when she won a modeling contest. This led to a contract with a European agency and some nude modeling. She was trying to get out of Eastern European post USSR poverty, you see.
She met Trumpy through Paolo Zampolli, who was an owner of the european modeling agency, and then moved to NYC where she continued her modeling career. She dated Trumpy and they married in '05, but apparently there was a 'lewd' interview in 1999 with Howard Stern that put her on the 'front page.'
It is sad to me, as the father of three daughters and grandfather of two girls, that Melania had to trade on her looks just to escape grinding poverty. It sickens me that women are always judged on how they look instead of on their accomplishments and abilities.
It is a sad story, and I think a nightmare for her with all that is going on now. She was never ready for the First Lady role, probably never wanted it. For me, I guess I feel sorry for her and millions of other women who do exactly what she did to try and escape hard, hard lives.
