(5,999 posts)truly believe that when good things happen to them it is a direct message from God, especially if they prayed for said good thing to happen to them. They conveniently do not believe that when bad things happen to them it is also a message from God. Bad things happening to OTHER people is a message from God but bad things happening to them is not. It is the intersection of cognitive bias (same as the people anti-abortion people who get abortions - THEIR abortion is DIFFERENT - also same as people who try to make a distinction between the "deserving poor" and the "undeserving poor"
combined with the use of religion as a crutch. It is a common characteristic of conservative religious people which liberal religious people seem to be able to avoid.
