8. There are rigid fundamentalists in every religion

and they are the source of any idiocy that emerges among believers of every type. Ordinary people of faith are tolerant, strive to be kind, respectful of differences, and supportive of diversity. Those who interpret their Scriptures unvariably literally, and are not respectful of individuals' consciences, almost always overreact to anything which challenges their belief system. Most of us respect the philosophy of atheism, the peaceful expressions of Islam, Judaism, the variants of Christianity, Hinduism, Universalism and all the beautiful expressions of many forms of faith around us. And the intolerance and violence of individuals like those exposed in this post bring us abhorrence and great sadness. Authentic faith brings tranquility and comfort. The example in this post does not. May this exposure help them reassess their position.
