I can't tell you how many times I have sat invisible in a room while people used my own personal characteristics as an insult - without knowing they were doing it. Virtually none of them would have done so had I been wearing a label (gay, rape survivor, etc.). I know that because I make it a point of having a conversation with many of them after the fact. I'm also sure you've been in a room when someone said something derrogatory about race, gender, medical conditions, then realized someone in that category was there, turned, and said, "But of course I didn't mean you." It happens all the time - and the speaker did mean me - or they wouldn't have tried to take it back when they realized their foot was in their mouth.

If you wouldn't say it when you know I'm there, you shouldn't be saying it at all.
