In reply to the discussion: Buckingham Palace announces King Charles diagnosed with cancer, will step away from pubic duties during treatment. [View all]SomewhereInTheMiddle
(661 posts)48. I can think of two recent examples
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark adbicated at the end of 2023 in favor of her son. She is 83 and had been on the throne since 1972.
Pope Bendict abdicated in 2013 at the age of 83.
It almost seems to be a trend.
I could see Charles deciding he could not fulfil his duties and abdicating to enjoy a retirement or at least a peaceful last days. He does not appear to enjoy being King that much, especially as the face/voice of a conservative government with which he has many political disagreements.
He might go for a regency instead with responsibility shared by his wife and eldest son.
Just my thoughts.

I don't know. I see your point, though. I suppose it's because I felt so sad for her and continue to view him as the big

He's been perfectly free to walk away from it for the last 57 years as others have done. No

Just because a watery tart threw a sword at one of his forerunners doesn't make him King

Well...that's too bad. I wonder if he will just abdicate. There's been rumors that he said he wanted to, maybe
