Trump is not the force behind Christian Nationalism, so if he loses nothing really changes there. People like Leonard Leo, and many organizations pump lots of money into their lies and campaigns to criminalize abortion and just being LGBTQ+. Those who are not Republican extremists who want to see the US ruled as a theocracy will leave the party, and the extremists will only get worse. As just one example, I think of a group calling the selves the Abortion Abolitionists, who have introduced laws to punish any woman who has an abortion for any reason with prosecution and the death penalty. Women who have a miscarriage at home would be hauled into court to prove that it was natural and punished if they could not.

Extremism only works to a certain point, and I do not think that the Christian Nationalists will achieve their goals. But to prevent that, it’s vitally important for Democrats to hold the presidency and the Senate to prevent hundreds more judges like Matthew Kacsmaryk (the Texas judge ruling that the FDA could not approve the abortion drugs) from being appointed, judges who try to use the courts to turn their religious views into law.
