a mild word or expression substituted for one considered too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant/embarrassing...

Trump didn't lie he: mischaracterized/exaggerated/misrepresented/distorted/mislead...
Trump didn't incite an insurrection he: fomented/instigated/urged on/spurred/provoked
Trump did not steal documents he: withheld/concealed

and for the last 9 years the media has parsed Trump's nonsensical verbal vomit, giving weight to his racist blather, ignoring the cruelty/stupidity/greed/arrogance/threat of the man...
