that they moved away from a relatively safe country because they didnt want to be around people whose lifestyle they didnt approve of even though theyd never have more than casual interaction with them
to a country that is not only extremely dangerous, but one in which theyre completely helpless. Imagine theyd moved to Poland, which is as anti-gay as Russia is. Since the Polish language uses basically the same alphabet as English does - there are extra letters in it and a Polish Scrabble set has A LOT of Zs in it, but the base 26 letters are the same - they could have at least read street signs and food labels. But Russia uses the Cyrillic alphabet, which is completely different. They cant even buy a can of beans for dinner if there isnt a picture of beans on the label.
