(5,057 posts)as belief in religion is contrary to the doctrine of glorious revolution where the workers throw off the bonds of repressive institutions including the church (religion is the opiate of the masses, etc). So he's moved to a country with a 90 year history of actively suppressing religion hoping to find a Christian paradise. D'oh.
And yes, Russia isn't a communist country any more but culturally it is still working through the repercussions of church attendance being effectively banned for generations.
As a side note, when I taught in China our school threw a Halloween party where all the teachers had to dress up and lead activities. I went as a fortune teller and was later told off by the school because fortune telling is illegal in China as something that promotes superstition.
So yeah, wake up and taste the freedom!
