17. There is one Senate seat but two terms

California already has one senator duly elected to a full term in 2022. This year there are two contests. The first is to fill the seat vacated by Sen. Feinstein: that term runs from Nov. 2024-Jan. 3, 2025. That's because state election law says any vacated Senate seats will be filled at the next general election. The second is for the full term for that seat, Jan. 2025- Jan. 2031. This is explained in the state-wide voters' guide, and in some counties (Santa Clara, for example) was even stated on the ballot itself.

You can legally split your vote the way you described, but we don't get an extra senator (much as I think we deserve one).
